OVERALL OBJECTIVES:
  • To assist in the strengthening of democratic institutions in and out of government.
  • To conduct civic education campaigns on Human Rights, Peace Building and Reconciliation, Democracy and Good Governance working with various local civil groups with the same objectives.
  • To strengthen the capacity of various civic groups to enable them to constructively and genuinely participate in the governance of their country.
  • To promote a spirit of tolerance, peace and reconciliation in a multi-party democracy.
  • To encourage national identity through a cultural and historical awareness campaign.

IMMEDIATE OBJECTIVES:

  • To promote democratic participation of civil society.
  • To promote gender empowerment for gender equality.
  • To promote human rights and the rule of law.

We have received resources for all our programmes on the exception of some aspect of Human Rights, as well as the development of the women’s manifesto. For most of the implementation of it programmes Campaign for Good Governance will be using several consultants and civil groups nationwide. In addition to all these programmes the organization has Field Officers in all the twelve districts who act as focal points for the various groups operating within those areas. Secondly, Campaign for Good Governance has embarked on voter education and training of domestic monitors for the forthcoming elections.

Civil Society Empowerment and Coordination
Campaign for Good Governance believes a viable, strong and well-informed civil society is central to institutional pluralism. To be able to achieve this, Campaign for Good Governance is committed to building a strong national civil society network, developing a comprehensive database of civil society groups in Sierra Leone, bringing civil groups together on various occasion to discuss issues, provide training for them as well as institutional support in terms of stationeries etc. The organization provides civil groups with airtimes on the various FM Stations and venues utilized for their meetings across the country to discuss their programmes and various governance issues.

Human Rights
Campaign for Good Governance human rights programmes includes monitoring, documenting and reporting human rights violations across the country, providing legal advice and representation to victims of human rights violations, providing medical supports to victims of domestic and sexual violence, visiting and providing support to women prisoners, deliberating and discussing obsolete laws, laws just enacted by parliament and bills before parliament to encourage government to change these laws, civil society be aware and understand the new laws as well as encourage civil society input into bills going through parliament respectively, civil society participation, providing human rights education on women’s and children’s rights on radio, schools and communities.
Gender Empowerment
The gender empowerment programme will be working to promote economic and political empowerment of women. On political empowerment the organization is organizing a national consultation of women’s groups on the issues of critical concerns to them that they would like to see addressed by government. It is hoped that this will encourage and enable women issues be put on the national political agenda for the 2001 elections. The organization is also developing a comprehensive database of women in decision-making position to be published simultaneously with the women’s manifesto as an appendix. On the economic empowerment of women the organization will be developing a Micro Credit Financing Scheme for market women across the country.

ACHIEVEMENTS

— The development of a partnership between civil society and government based on dialogue, consultation and collaboration.
—The promotion of dialogue, consultation and networking amongst civil society.
—The sensitization of the Sierra Leonean public on democracy and good governance which has enabled them to participate in the evolving political process.
—The facilitation of broad base discussion amongst Sierra Leoneans in public forums, radio discussions and public lectures about current political issues that affect the sustainability of good governance.

FIELD OFFICERS

Campaign for Good Governance has twelve Field officers one in each district, who have undergone and are still undergoing training on capacity building, through the assistance of a Consultant. They have been provided with digital cameras and Video Cassettes, by the National Endowment for Democracy. (NED) and also other necessary materials and training to enable them to do documentations for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
